Dodge had earlier decided to kill of the V8 completely with the Durango being the last to car to offer the Hemi engines in R/T and SRT Hellcat forms. They even released some final editions of the vehicle but it looks like that they are going to extend the production of the V8 Durango due to “popular demand” and the vehicle will go on to live till the next year.
Looks like things are stirring up after the CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares resigned. There were claims that Tavares was the driving force behind the killing of the V8 engine. The Americans have a strong affinity towards the V8 and Dodge CEO, Matt McAlear said, “It’s the perfect capstone for our celebration of 20 years of Hemi-powered Durango models.”
This is one area where the problem lies. The Durango is old and it has been carrying with the same generation since 14 years. It needs a complete redesign and it made much more sense to continue the Hemi with newer models in the lineup but unfortunately, those were sacked before the Durango.
For those who still want a V8 shoved inside a 14-year old car, they can opt for either the 5.7L NA V8 which produces 360 bhp and 528 Nm of torque or they can get the full fat 6.2L supercharged Hellcat V8 which produces 710 bhp and 874 Nm of torque. The middle spec 6.4L NA V8 with 475 bhp and 637 Nm of torque has unfortunately been discontinued. The 3.6L oldy of a V6 still remains the base engine option in the Durango.
If you really want to spend big bucks on a Durango and really love the Hellcat V8, you can opt for one of the special editions which was technically commemorating the death of the V8 but we don’t see how this is relevant now and it feels sacrilege to ask more than $100k for a vehicle which was supposed to be a special last edition but now is not.
