Following the terrible Greek boat catastrophe that claimed the lives of at least five Pakistani citizens, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered stern punishment against Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officers accused in aiding people traffickers, according to The Express Tribune.
PM Sharif stressed the importance of tackling such events and directed the necessary authorities to speed up investigations into the expanding problem of human trafficking during a meeting held in Islamabad on Friday.
“Such incidents tarnish Pakistan’s global image and must be dealt with swiftly and effectively,” he said. Following the most recent tragedy, in which a boat overturned close to Greece, killing Pakistanis, the prime minister issued the directions.
The PM voiced worry over the lack of action taken to solve the same boat capsizing event that occurred last year. “The delay in taking action against those responsible for last year’s boat capsizing incident is concerning,” he said. He continued, “We cannot allow this to continue, as these tragedies only harm our country’s reputation.”
The group received updates on the latest events surrounding the tragic boat accident close to the Greek island of Gavdos, as well as preventative actions implemented to fight human trafficking.
According to The Express Tribune, the Pakistani embassy in Greece acknowledged that five Pakistanis had perished in the event but claimed to be unsure of the precise number of those still unaccounted for.
We have identified five deceased Pakistanis and rescued 47 others so far,” a Pakistan mission official told the reporters. This is the last information that is currently accessible, and there is no specific information on missing individuals.
In a significant assault on people traffickers implicated in the boat disaster, the FIA detained two of its own officials for carelessness and filed proceedings against three traffickers on Thursday.
Due to their improper passenger screening at Faisalabad Airport, Inspector Zubair Ashraf and Sub Inspector Shahid Imran were placed under arrest. According to The Express Tribune, both policemen were on duty when the 18 victims of the Greek boat disaster went through the airport’s screening procedure.
As Pakistan works to address the growing problem of human trafficking, the prime minister’s office has made it plain that anybody found guilty of carelessness or corruption would suffer severe repercussions.
