PM Surya Ghar Yojna: 300 units of free electricity, up to 40% subsidy, this scheme is a hit in the country
New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme in February 2024. This government scheme is becoming very popular and the number of its subscribers is increasing continuously in the country. Within a year of the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, the figure for solar installations has reached close to the total installations of the last decade. Let us tell you that under this scheme, up to 300 units of free electricity are available and a subsidy is also given for installing solar rooftops on the roof of the house.
Since its launch in February this year, 685,763 installations have been done under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, which is already 86 per cent of the installations installed in a decade. The highest demand in the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme is from the 3-5 kW segment, which is 77 per cent of the total installations. At the same time, 14 per cent of the demand is from the segment of more than 5 kW.
Gujarat has the highest number of installations.
Gujarat has the highest number of installations, followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. Gujarat has the highest number of solar installations under this initiative at 2,86,545. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have had 1,26,344 and 53,423 solar installations respectively.
1.45 crore registrations under the scheme
According to information given by the government in Parliament, 1.45 crore registrations have been done under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. This scheme aims to supply solar power to more than one crore houses by March 2027. The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to install 1 crore rooftop solar power systems in the residential sector with an allocated budget of Rs 75,021 crore by the financial year 2027. Currently, the states where the number of installations is increasing include Tripura, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
Annual savings of Rs 75,000 crore are also expected
With a target to benefit one crore families, the programme is also expected to help the government save Rs 75,000 crore annually in power costs. The government provides a subsidy of up to 40 per cent to the beneficiaries of the scheme, making renewable energy more affordable and accessible.
