A suspected armed robber has died after sustaining injuries whilst being restrained by shop staff and a member of the public following the attempted raid in Elm Park, .
were called to a shop on St Nicholas Avenue at 6.49am on December 30, after reports that a 52-year-old man had threatened staff with a knife.
were called to the scene and transported the man to hospital where he was described as being in a "critical condition".
Despite efforts to save him, the man succumbed to his injuries on New Years' Day.
A spokesperson said: "Officers are continuing their enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident. At this stage, there is no indication of any further suspects involved."
The man's next of kin have been informed and an investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances leading to the death.
No arrests have been made at this time.

According to police figures, 126 crimes were reported in Elm Park in October 2024, the most recently released figures.
Of these crimes, nearly half were classed as shoplifting or anti-social behaviour, with violence and sexual offences accounting for 15% of crimes in the area.
