Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bengal on Saturday had held a closed-door meeting under leadership of party observer Sunil Bansal, Amit Malviya to discuss the membership drive after they failed to achieve the target of one crore new members set by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
According to party sources, BJP state president and MoS Sukanta Majumdar was hopeful to get at least 50 lakh new members during the drive.
Presently, the saffron camp is conducting the active members drive in the state.
“80000 booth committees will be made in the coming days. During that time while deciding upon the district presidents the new state president’s name will be announced. The announcement is likely to be made by this month’s end,” said the party sources.
Several names are under consideration as the new state president of West Bengal.
According to party sources, names of Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato, Agnimitra Paul, Shamik Bhattacharya are under consideration along with names like Suvendu Adhikari, Sukanta Majumdar and Dilip Ghosh.
“Chances of making Suvendu Adhikari the new state president are less as he is the Leader of Opposition. Sukanta Majumdar is central minister and Dilip Ghosh is not liked due to his speeches so chances are slim for both Ghosh and Majumdar. Basically three names are emerging which are Agnimitra Paul who is very close to Adhikari, Shamik Bhattacharya who is liked by several old party leaders and Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato,” further added the sources.
