Music is a key part of Indian movies. Renowned singers such as Diljit Dosanjh and Arijit Singh earn lakhs to crores per song. However the richest male singer in India is AR Rahman known for his expectational talent and numerous accolades including two Oscars and two Grammys. Born in Madras into a Hindu family his childhood name was Dilip Kumar Rajagopal. His father R.K. Shekhar was a music composer for Tamil and Malayalam films. When Rahman was only 9 years old he lost his father. Balancing his studies and work to support his family he struggled with his education and ultimately failed in school. In an old interview Rahman mentioned that during his fathers battle with cancer he met a Sufi Saint which was a turning point in his life. However a few years after his fathers death Rahmans journey of spirituality began. He along with his family converted to Islam and changed his name from Dilip Kumar to Allah Rakha Rahman. Director Mani Ratnam gave him opportunity to compose music for his film Roja which marked his journey as a composer. His work on Roja earned him Filmfare award for Best Music Director. Though primarily known as music composer Rahman also lent his vocals for iconic songs including Dil Se Re (Dil Se..) Ishq Bina (Taal) Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera (Swades) Roobaroo (Rang De Basanti) Tere Bina (Guru) Kun Faya Kun and Nadaan Parinde (Rockstar). He recently composed music for Amar Singh Chamkila and sang Bol Mohabbat with Kailash Kher. Today A.R. Rahman is renowned not only in Bollywood and South but also on an international scale. According to GQ India the 57-year-old musician boasts a staggering net worth of Rs 1728 crore. The legendary artist who charges a whopping Rs 3 crore for one song has reportedly become the highest-paid singer in India.
