BBC One's 'Call the Midwife' returned with a heart-tugging episode that saw the budding midwife Rosalind Clifford, portrayed by Natalie Quarry, subtly reveal her affection for Cyril Robinson (Zephryn Taitte). The duo had been dedicating their time at a homeless shelter and had bonded over their mutual desire to aid those in need.
As they grew closer, it became evident that Rosalind was harbouring deeper feelings for Cyril. Yet, her aspirations seemed to crumble in the latest instalment when Cyril disclosed his plans to take a break to be with his wife Lucille (Leonie Elliott).
Cyril's decision came after he received a letter from Lucille in an earlier episode, which made him realise the depth of his longing for her and the importance of nurturing their marriage. A crestfallen Rosalind managed to express her happiness for Cyril's opportunity to visit Jamaica, despite her own disappointment.
Lucille's exit from the series was driven by her choice to focus on her mental well-being following a miscarriage. She departed in season 12 due to a mix of depression, yearning for home, and the escalating anti-immigrant sentiment in Britain at the time.
Leonie Elliott, who brought Lucille to life, took to social media to confirm her departure from the series. In her post, she expressed: "Having spent six years on a truly wonderful show, with a fantastic team, I have fallen deeper and deeper in love with Lucille."
"I feel honored to have represented the pioneering Windrush generation and their incredible impact on British society."
While Lucille's ticket to Jamaica might have been an open return, Cyril was holding out hope she would come back. However, after a trip to Jamaica in the 12th season, he came back to Poplar solo.
Audiences later learned that she was flourishing in a new role and relishing being around her family again.
This has sparked concern among fans that Cyril might exit the series permanently to reunite with his wife in Jamaica.
In 2024, they took to Reddit to speculate on this possibility, with user clutzycook suggesting: "I think they'll do a Peter/Chummy. He'll hang around for another season or so and then just vanish and it'll be assumed that he went off to be with her finally."
Yet, Wawa-85 proposed that a romance could still blossom between Cyril and Rosalind, implying that Cyril might divorce Lucille following his Jamaican visit.
They posted: "I don't think they will just disappear Cyril as he's been central to the story in quite a few episodes this season. There seems to be some subtle flirtation between the new midwives Joyce and Rosalind and Cyril so wonder if that may come of something."
Sickofchildren concurred, adding: "He's got a lot of chemistry with that new midwife, they'd make a nice couple. Lucille never appreciated him but then again he shouldn't be forced into a new marriage."
Ninevah8 chimed in: "Came here to see this - he'll be getting together with the new midwife (can't remember her name) and it'll open up the ongoing discussion about interracial relationships with main characters."
Call the Midwife is broadcast on One, Sundays at 8pm.
