Noida International Airport: In April 2025, passenger flights will start at Jewar Airport, also referred to as Noida International Airport. With just four months till opening, travelers may have concerns regarding the airport’s accessibility to surrounding communities and the existing transportation options.
The airport is located near Jewar, which is around 90 km from Delhi’s IGI Airport, 70 km from Connaught Place, 60 km from Noida City Center, and 40 km from Greater Noida’s Pari Chowk, the final stop on the metro grid. The airport’s first phase foot traffic, which aims to reach 5–6 million people in the first year, will determine its viability. With the exception of a few private and UP Roadways bus lines, there is no public transportation to Jewar; therefore, the next two months will need to be a laborious time on the ground.
There are many transportation projects in the works, including a Delhi Metro route that connects to the Airport Express line and a 72-kilometer fast rail corridor. These are anticipated to materialize, nevertheless, at least by 2030. NIA just launched an airport cab service in partnership with Mahindra Mobility after realizing this. In order to provide a city bus service that would offer a reliable link to the airport, the authorities of Noida, Greater Noida, and Yamuna have also joined together to create an SPV.
Although travelers may choose to use intercity taxis, the cost of doing so from any of the NCR cities may equal almost half of their domestic airfare. The airport’s readiness to accommodate foreign travelers who could choose Noida over IGI because to its close proximity to popular tourist attractions like Agra and Mathura is also called into doubt by the connection issue.
The cost of the all-electric airport taxi service, for which the project concessionaire has partnered with Mahindra, has also come up for debate, even though quick train and metro connections are unlikely to be completed until 2030. The proposal states that taxis would transport people to and from the airport. Reservations will be made via a website, call centers, airport kiosks, and a smartphone app.
The planned city routes include one that connects Noida Sector 35 with the airport via Pari Chowk and another that runs from Jewar to the Botanical Garden metro station in Noida. Additionally, buses to Khurja, Sikandrabad, and Bulandshahr are planned. Officials agreed that the bus service was their only short-term transportation solution.
The service’s goal is to provide commuters and travelers at the airport access to a dedicated public transportation system. According to a Times of India report, Arun Vir Singh, the CEO of Noida International Airport Ltd. (NIAL) and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), stated that a network of electric bus routes connecting the Jewar airport with additional important locations in the area and beyond would be established very soon.
“The financial model and timelines are still being worked out, but we are committed to providing transport services to these regions,” he said.
According to officials, YEIDA had applied for authorization from UP Roadways and would, when all permits were received, employ an operator to operate the buses. There will be 175-200 buses in the original fleet, each with appropriate room for baggage. Similar to shared taxis, a traveler will need to download a smartphone application in order to reserve a seat on the route of his choice.Experts maintained that, at least for the time being, Delhi Airport may have an advantage over Noida due to the absence of quick transportation choices.
The construction of the airport itself was the exclusive emphasis for a considerable amount of time. Connectivity received little attention. If this problem is not resolved as soon as possible, travelers will choose IGI Airport since it is much more convenient. People shouldn’t have to rely on taxis. According to the study, S. Velmurugan, chief scientist and director of traffic engineering and safety engineering at the Central Road Research Institute, said that public transportation, such as buses with at least 50 well-connected routes, may greatly facilitate travel and assist middle-class travelers.
The Yamuna Expressway Entrepreneurs Association president, Rishabh Nigam, would not rule out an economic effect.
“Although Noida Airport has the potential to revolutionize the area, its success mostly hinges on basic problems like accessibility and auxiliary infrastructure. For the airport to really fulfill its promise, these factors need to be given top priority,” he said.
The sole connecting infrastructure currently under construction is a 750-meter elevated road that connects the airport to the Yamuna Expressway. For travelers coming from Delhi or other areas of the National Capital Region, this presents no answer, even if it will make the last portion of the trip easier.
“YIAPL, UP govt, and the Center are working closely to ensure seamless connectivity to the airport by road and rail,” said a statement from Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Zurich AG that is developing the airport. Our objective is to provide all travelers dependable and practical modes of transportation. We are also trying to form alliances with reliable companies to provide shuttle, bus, and taxi services to and from the airport. We are spending money on top-notch infrastructure. We anticipate a variety of transportation options for all price ranges when the airport opens, such as long-distance and intercity buses, shuttles, taxis, and ride-sharing services.
IGI to International Airport in Noida
Delhi’s IGI offers a variety of transportation choices, including buses, taxis, and the metro. From the New Delhi train station, passengers may opt to go to Terminal 3 of IGI in about 20 minutes by using the Delhi Metro’s Airport Express Line. IGI is also connected to other areas of the city via buses run by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and private operators. In addition to taxis, autorickshaws are another option for short-distance transportation.
