A major £60 million infrastructure project to replace the ageing Clifton bridge over the near Penrith, has been unveiled.

The 71-year-old bridge, serving as a vital link in the railway network connecting northern and , has been deemed unsafe, prompting urgent action.

The bridge's deterioration has led to operational restrictions. Currently, it only allows one train to cross at a time, significantly impacting passenger and freight services.

The new bridge aims to restore full capacity and improve the reliability of this critical transportation route.

Initial preparations have begun on-site, with construction compounds being established and access roads created in partnership with National Highways.

The dismantling and replacement of the 135-meter-long structure are slated for early 2026.

Plans for alternative transport options for rail passengers and diversion routes for motorists will be communicated well in advance.

Olivia Boland, Network Rail project sponsor, said: "We are rebuilding Clifton bridge over the M6 to keep rail passengers and motorway users safe for years to come. This project is essential as the bridge has reached the end of its life."

Steve Mason, National Highways programme delivery manager, added: "This is an essential Network Rail project to secure the future of one of the most important railway lines in the country.

"We'll be working closely with Network Rail throughout to keep motorway users and local people up to date with developments, especially as we approach the two weekend closures of the motorway at the beginning of next year."

The project builds on the success of similar infrastructure efforts, such as the recent replacement of the M62 Castleton bridge.

However, the project could cause significant disruptions to both road and rail services.

From January 2025 until project completion in 2026, traffic management measures will be implemented on the , including lane closures and a hard shoulder shutdown starting approximately 5km south of Junction 40.

Railway services will face two planned weekend closures in January 2026, with the M6 entirely shut between Junction 39 at Shap and Junction 40 near Penrith during those times.

The closures are scheduled for January 2-5 and January 9-12, 2026.

Network Rail is working closely with train operators and National Highways to minimise disruption.
