India Open 2025: PV Sindhu, Kiran George, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto power through to the second round

New Delhi: PV Sindhu the former champion shook off the cobwebs from a long break to secure a hard-fought victory at the Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2025. She defeated Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei in straight games while fellow Indians Kiran George the men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and the mixed doubles pairing of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also emerged victorious to reach the second round of the tournament at the KD Jadhav Hall on Tuesday.
Sindhu Brings Her A-Game After a Long Break
In her first tournament since her marriage in December Sindhu faced off against Sung in a 51-minute battle. Despite a few initial rhythm struggles Sindhu powered through with a 21-14 22-20 win. The world No. 16 showed signs of rust early especially in the second game where she let a commanding 20-10 lead slip allowing Sung to push for a game point. However Sindhu regained control fighting back to secure a win.
After a long break its always difficult to find the rhythm but I’m happy to win in straight games said Sindhu who will now face Japan’s Manami Suizu in the next round. My shuttle was going mid-court in the second game but I was confident I could pull through.
Kiran George Stages a Thrilling Comeback
Kiran George a last-minute entrant into the tournament survived a nail-biting contest against Japan’s Yushi Tanaka. After taking the first game 21-19 Kiran struggled in the second which Tanaka claimed 21-14. The third game saw Kiran take a commanding lead at the break but Tanaka fought back and saved three match points from 18-20. Kiran held his nerves saving three match points of his own and eventually clinched the win 27-25.
“I was hoping for a chance as I was the first reserve and I had come here early to ensure proper preparation Kiran said after his marathon match. I’ve been working on maintaining composure in such tight situations and today I managed to pull through.
Kiran now awaits the winner of the match between fourth seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand and Alex Lanier of France.
Satwik and Chirag Dig Deep in Men’s Doubles
The Indian men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were put to the test by Malaysia’s Wei Chong Man and Kai Wun Tee. The match was a hard-fought affair but the experienced Indian pair dug deep to win 23-21 19-21 21-16 moving into the second round.
Dhruv and Tanisha Stage a Comeback in Mixed Doubles
In mixed doubles Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto had a shaky start against Chen Cheng Kuan and Hsu Yin-Hui of Chinese Taipei. After being overwhelmed 8-21 in the first game the Indians bounced back to win 21-19 21-17 progressing to the next round. Kapila reflected on their recovery: We struggled with the conditions in the first game especially with the cold in the morning session but we adapted and were quicker in the second and third games.
Leong Jun Hao Stuns Li Shi Feng
In a major upset Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao defeated Chinese fifth seed Li Shi Feng in the men’s singles coming from behind to win 18-21 21-17 21-17. Meanwhile in women’s singles seventh seed Yeo Jia Min of Singapore saved two match points in the second game to defeat Vietnam’s Thuy Linh Nguyen 19-21 22-20 21-5.
