Minister of State for Personnel, Dr. Jitendra Singh, stated that there is neither any proposal for early retirement nor any plan to increase the retirement age for employees. This information was provided in a written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

Key Highlights:

  • No proposal for early retirement of central employees is under consideration.
  • The government has no plan to increase or decrease the retirement age.
  • Existing provisions under the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021 and All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefit) Rules, 1958 allow eligible employees to opt for early retirement.

What Did the Government Say?

In response to a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP Tejveer Singh regarding early retirement, the minister clarified that the government is not considering any such scheme. Singh also asked whether the government plans to extend the retirement age for employees who wish to work longer. On this, the minister reiterated that no such plan exists.

The minister further explained that while there is no overarching policy for flexibility in retirement age, employees who meet certain criteria can choose to retire early under existing rules. These provisions allow eligible employees to voluntarily retire under specific conditions outlined in the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021, and the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefit) Rules, 1958.

Reasons for Early Retirement

While there is no current agenda to introduce significant changes to retirement age, early retirement remains an option for various reasons:
