Stand-in captain of India women cricket team Smriti Mandhana created a new record in the third ODI match against Ireland at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on Wednesday. Mandhana smashed a whirlwind century off 70 balls and in the process became the batter with the fastest century for India in women’s cricket in ODIs.

Mandhana, leading the Indian women’s cricket team in the absence of regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. She broke the record of Harmanpreet Kaur, who had scored a century off 87 balls against South Africa in an ODI in Bengaluru last year.

The dynamic opener dazzled the innings with a sensational 135-run knock, studded with 12 boundaries and seven sixes, before being dismissed by Orla Prendergast at short fine leg. Mandhana’s stunning effort broke the previous record set by Harmanpreet Kaur.

Mandhana’s century is tied as the seventh-fastest in women’s ODI history, matching former England captain Charlotte Edwards’ feat from 2012. Former Australia captain Meg Lanning still holds the record for fastest ODI hundred in women’s cricket, off 45 balls against New Zealand in 2012-13 season.

Here’s a list of fastest hundred in women’s ODI cricket…

Mandhana put on 233 runs for first wickets with Pratika Rawal in just 26.4 overs after she won the toss and elected to bat first. Rawal went on to complete her maiden ODI century after the dismissal of Mandhana off exactly 100 balls with 14 fours.
