Chinese foreign ministry said on Monday (January 20) that the Myanmar military and Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) had signed a ceasefire deal and that it had come into effect on Saturday, reported Xinhua.

Mao Ning, Spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry, claimed that China had mediated peace talks between the two sides in Kunming. The ceasefire was agreed upon after seven rounds of peace talks.

As reported by Xinhua, Mao Ning said that resolution of tensions persisting in northern areas of Myanmar was in common interest of Myanmar and its neighbouring nations.

Myanmar has seen widespread violence after its military overthrew civilian government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021. Those unhappy with the military coup took to protesting. This eventually led to widespread armed resistance. The situation has not eased even today.

Mao Ning said China supported Myanmar's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity.

The military has been having a hard time effectively fighting the opposition across the country and several regions are now under the control of different rebel groups. All this is happening when Myanmar's economy is struggling.

Al Jazeera said that United Nations had urged all parties in the conflict to adhere to obligations under international humanitarian law.

The UN called on all parties "to guarantee unimpeded humanitarian access to deliver aid to the most vulnerable".
