Karun Nair, a batsman for Vidarbha and India, has stated his desire to return to his country after his outstanding performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024–25.
Throughout the competition, Nair was in outstanding form and finished as the top run scorer with an astounding 779 runs from only eight innings with a strike rate of 124.04 and an average of 389.50.
Many past selectors and cricket commentators took notice of him when he played well in the VHT 2024–25, scoring five hundreds and a half.
Discussions over Nair’s possible inclusion for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 were triggered by his incredible performance in the home competition; but, despite his stellar run, he was ultimately passed over for consideration.
The 33-year-old Nair recently said that his relentless desire to wear the Indian jersey once again drives his resolve to return with unflinching drive.
Of course, you must be thinking about the potential for India to make a return. You must never give up your dreams if you want to play for your nation. Nair told the Hindustan Times, “There are these ideas and aspirations in the head, but that’s just motivation.”
Because of his VHT 2024–25 performance, many people thought that Nair would be selected in India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and England ODIs side. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said at the Champions Trophy squad announcement that despite Nair’s outstanding exploits, the batter was unable to get a spot on the team.
Karun Nair was given a ray of hope by Agarkar, who said that despite not being included in the original team, he will be retained as a backup.
When those kinds of performances occur, we definitely had a conversation. I mean, they are really exceptional performances, and I mean someone who typically scores 700+, 750+, or whatever. It’s very hard to get a position on our squad right now. Take a look at the men that were selected. They’re all much over the mid-40s on average. Unfortunately, a team of 15 cannot accommodate everyone. However, their performances definitely grab your attention. There would undoubtedly be discussion about a player if he suffers an injury or loses form, Agarkar said at the news conference.
When Nair made his debut for India against England in 2016, his international career took off. He created history during the series by being only the second Indian batter, after the great Virender Sehwag, to reach a triple century in his third Test match.
