Carlisle United have discussed making an audacious approach to Steven Gerrard in their search for a new head coach.

The and England legend, 44, confirmed last week that he would no longer manage in the after leaving Al-Ettifaq, meaning he is unattached.

And Mirror Football understands that Gerrard's name has been discussed internally in relation to the Carlisle vacancy, albeit it remains to be seen if he would be interested in making such a move.

Carlisle are currently five points adrift of safety after a difficult spell under Williamson, who was sacked on Monday morning after a crushing 5-1 defeat at home to Swindon Town over the weekend.

The Cumbrians want to make a swift appointment as they battle to retain their EFL status and Gerrard would be an eye-catching appointment at that level given his past roles with Rangers and Aston Villa.

Carlisle's current sporting director, Robert Clarkson, spent time at Rangers during Gerrard's tenure before leaving the Scottish giants back in 2022.

He was appointed as Carlisle's new sporting directors by the club's ambitious American owners three months ago.

Carlisle were taken over by Castle Sport Group back in November 2023, a company run by the Piatak family from Jacksonville, Florida. The club were relegated from League One last season and have struggled again this term under both Paul Simpson and his successor, Williamson.
