Indias vice-captain Shubman Gill has alleviated worries regarding Virat Kohlis injury affirming that the prominent batter will be back in the starting lineup for the second ODI in Cuttack. Kohli missed the match in Nagpur due to a right knee injury which delayed his return to the team. He underwent a late fitness test to demonstrate his readiness to play but ultimately could not participate. In his absence Gill batted at number three and Yashasvi Jaiswal filled in for Kohli as India secured a victory by four wickets leading the series 1-0.
Gill informed the broadcaster post-match that Kohli experienced slight knee swelling in the morning but was fine during the practice the night prior to the game. Gill reassured that there is no cause for concern regarding Virat.
Fans will be pleased to see Kohli return especially since this was one of the rare matches he has missed in his career. With Kohli sidelined due to injury Gill stepped in as the primary batter and played a remarkable innings scoring 87 runs off 95 balls. The 25-year-old stated that as he currently bats at No. 3 in Test matches he didnt have to alter his playing style significantly. Gill mentioned that his approach was to adapt his batting according to the situation.
I think I play at number three in Test matches so it wasn’t a huge adjustment. But definitely the situation is slightly different. If you are batting at number three and early wickets fall you have to play according to the situation. However if the openers have built a good partnership then you have to carry that momentum forward. That was my thought process—to bat according to the situation and the over in which I had to come in said Gill.
India and England are set to face off in the second ODI scheduled for February 9 (Sunday) in Cuttack.
