According to an order of the UP government, the State Education Department has demanded the demonstration of SC-ST teachers and employees benefited from reservation in promotion from 15 November 1997 to 28 April 2012. The department has sought service books and list of such teachers and employees.

Recently, the Supreme Court had said in one of its decisions that reservation in government jobs for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) cannot be recognized as a fundamental right.

The Supreme Court also said that it is mandatory for states to collect data to assess insufficiency of SC-ST representation. This decision of the court is being discussed across the country because it is an important decision related to the issue of reservation in Indian society.

The Central Government had informed the Supreme Court that the cancellation of reservation in the promotion of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) employees in government jobs could cause unrest among employees. Various cases can be filed against this. Earlier, the court refused to decide the criteria to determine the insufficiency of representation to give reservation in promotion for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes candidates in government jobs.
