Serena Williams just attended the Super bowl halftime show on February 9, and people are just wondering why? The tennis ace isn’t on tennis court, rather at Super bowl, and people are cooking theories as to why! Let’s call it a blink-and-you-will-miss kinda appearance of Serena at Kendrick Lamar’s Super bowl halftime show this Sunday.

The 43-year old athlete was grooving to Lamar’s song “Not like us” as the camera panned at her for a few seconds. She swayed from side to side crip-walking, moving to the beat as she raised her hands and kicked her feet.

Williams even took to X to share about her moment at the Super bowl, reflecting on her experience. She said, “Man, I did not crip-walk like that at Wimbledon. Oh, I would have been fined. It was all love.” She was referencing to an instance where she was criticized for performing the same moves after winning Wimbledon in 2012.

On Instagram, Williams wrote, “I died a little!”

Serena’s appearance is also talked about this much as Lamar had called her to stage on a song known as ‘Diss to Drake’. Lamar and Drake have years long feud where they have gone on with a series of diss tracks on one another, along with a lawsuit.

And for those who do not know, Serena and Drake have a dating history, that’s why Serena’s appearance is so potent.

Crip-walking has been associated with gang life often facing controversy, being banned in schools and proms in 2002. Williams made headlines performing the move after her win against Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon 2012. A journalsi at the press conference later on said, “All people know that crip-walking is not just a dance.”

To this, Serena had responded, “It was just a dance. I did not know that’s what it was called. Second, why are you asking me that? If anything, you should be trying to ask me questions to lift me up not bring such things…I’m done with that question.”

Her crip-walking performance again at Super bowl has brought mixed reactions from netizens. Some users were impressed with her moves, commenting, “I saw you and screamed, ‘That’s Serena, I know that Crip-walk!”

While another user said, “I think half of my neighborhood heard me screaming your name! looking good.”

While some users were wondering why did Serena Williamd dance to crip-walk. One of them said, “Was kinda shocked. Always figured you as more class than crip walking on Live TV given your sister’s situation. Love ya, but shocked.”

Notably, William’s half-sister, Yetunde Price was killed in a drive- by shooting in 2003 in Compton, California. And a local gang member was convicted for Price’s murder later on. After 2012 and this year, Serena has also performed the moves at the ESPY awards during her opening monologue in 2024.

When the song ‘Not like us’ began to play, Serene crip-walked and then said, “He will make your hometown not like you. The next time Drake sits courtside at a Raptors game, they are going to ‘Forrest Gump’ him. Seat’s taken.”

It’s been almost a decade since Serena and Drake’s dating rumors surfaced, the romance although ended in 2015.
