Some disciplined bowling allowed India to restrict Pakistan to 241 all out in 49.4 overs in the ICC Champions Trophy match at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
Facing a must-win situation following their big defeat to New Zealand in the opening game, Pakistan could not capitalise after winning the toss and electing to bat against their arch-rivals.
India got two wickets in the first 10 overs after Babar Azam (23) was caught behind off Hardik Pandya and Imam ul Haq (10) was run out by a direct throw from Axar Patel.
Saud Shakeel (62 off 76 balls) and skipper Mohammad Rizwan (46 off 77 balls) put up a fight but their 104-run partnership for the third wicket was broken when Patel (10-0-49-1) bowled the Pakistan captain.
Saud Shakeel plays a shot.
Rizwan’s wicket sparked a batting collapse and despite a fine effort from Khushdil Shah (38 off 39 balls), Pakistan never threatened to put up a big total on the board.
Kuldeep Yadav (9-0-40-3), who dismissed Salman Agha (19), Shaheen Shah Afridi (0) and Naseem Shah (14), was the pick of India’s bowlers.
