🎬 Vicky Kaushal’s historical film 'Chhava' is receiving immense love, especially in Maharashtra. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the film. However, a new controversy has erupted over the depiction of Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke.
The film portrays Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke as betraying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, leading to his capture by Aurangzeb. However, the descendants of the Shirke family claim this is false and misleading.
🗣️ Laxmikant Raje Shirke, the 13th descendant of Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke, has strongly objected to the portrayal, saying it distorts history and damages their ancestral legacy.
📜 Laxmikant Raje Shirke has sent a legal notice to director Laxman Utekar. He has also announced plans to file a ₹100 crore defamation lawsuit against the filmmakers.
📞 In response to the controversy, Laxman Utekar personally reached out to Bhushan Shirke, another descendant of the family, and apologized for any unintentional hurt caused.
💬 Director's Statement:
"We have only mentioned the names Ganoji and Kanhoji in 'Chhava', without their surnames. Their village has also not been disclosed. Our intention was never to hurt the sentiments of the Shirke family. However, if the film has caused any distress, I sincerely apologize."
Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke were brothers of Maharani Yesubai, the wife of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
🔹 Ganoji Shirke was also the brother-in-law of Sambhaji Maharaj, as his sister Rajkunwarbai Saheb was married to him.
🔹 Their father, Pilaji Shirke, was a Mughal chieftain who ruled Dabhol.
🔹 Historical accounts suggest that they collaborated with Mughal commander Makrab Khan, leading to the capture of Sambhaji Maharaj.
'Chhava' has become a massive success at the box office, but the controversy over historical accuracy remains a major topic of debate. While Laxman Utekar has apologized, it remains to be seen whether the Shirke family proceeds with legal action.
