Varanasi has become the district in Uttar Pradesh with the highest number of C-section births performed in government medical institutions, which is a noteworthy development in the medical field. The Kashi Vidyapeeth and Cholapur blocks have been at the top of the UP Health Dashboard for three months in a row, holding this position for the last year.

The district’s government medical units performed around 34,393 deliveries between April 2024 and January 2025, exceeding the 34,000 objective with a success rate of 101.15 percent.

The seamless facilitation of both normal and C-section births was made possible by continuous improvements in healthcare facilities at district hospitals and community health centers, according to Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Sandeep Chaudhary.

Varanasi’s impressive success in institutional deliveries during the previous 12 months is confirmed by the most recent rankings. Hospital registers and the ‘Mantra’ app, which facilitates beneficiary verification, infant registration, and direct online payments under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), are used to coordinate data collecting for these births.

Nodal Officer Dr. HC Maurya and Deputy CMO (RCH) emphasized the outstanding institutional delivery performance of Baragaon, Cholapur, Harhua, and Kashi Vidyapeeth. Under the JSY, the regions as a whole established an annual goal of 40,801. From medical schools and district hospitals to sub-centers, there are continuous efforts to further expand institutional services.

The ‘Mantra’ app is now available in all government health centers that provide maternity care. In a recent upgrade, labor room staff nurses and ANMs now access the program using Human Resource codes rather than unique IDs. Furthermore, the community-level e-Kavach program is being used to routinely identify pregnant women, guaranteeing prompt medical treatments.
