Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) came into existence by an Act of Parliament, the Central Universities (Amendment) Act 2014 (No. 35 of 2014). The university became functional on 3 February 2016. Located in Motihari, Bihar, this university is close to the historical site of Mahatma Gandhi's Champaran Satyagraha. The main objective of establishing the university was to make higher education reach rural areas and to coordinate modern education with Gandhian values.
The university is built in an area of more than 500 acres.
In the early days, the university started its journey with limited resources and a temporary campus. Gradually expanding, it is now spread over an area of more than 500 acres.
