Getting your home spotless is a big task and often when cleaning there are a number of spots we either don't bother with or completely forget about - and they end up becoming much dirtier than we expect. Neglecting these spots could lead to bad smells and even go as far as impacting health. So, just in time for those , a has revealed which spots should be dealt with during a big tidy-up.

Joyce French, cleaning expert at HomeHow has worked in the cleaning industry for over 20 years, specialising in domestic cleaning and she revealed the six places that are not to be forgetten about during your next clean up. Not only that, but she also shared the best ways to make sure you defeat those and get them sparkling clean.

Top of cabinets

Cleaning the front of the cabinets is something many people tend to do regularly. However, leaving the tops behind can cause a load of grease, dust and grime to build up resulting in foul odours and even triggering certain allergies.

For the best way to tackle this going forward, the expert recommends using either a grease-cutting store-bought cleaning product or simply mixing warm water and vinegar and scrubbing the build-up with a microfibre cloth. An extra tip would be to use some old newspapers to catch any dust that can be lifted away.

Stove hoods

These can quickly get dirty due to their "constant exposure" to food and grease in the kitchen. It's essential to keep them clean because if not they can easily become damaged or even completely stop working. Joyce explains that removing the filter and soaking it in warm, soapy water is the trick to getting rid of any grime on it.

Once that's done you can use a degreasing solution or make a baking soda and vinegar mixture to clean the hood before wiping it down with a clean cloth and reassembling.

Skirting boards

These areas can quickly pile up on dust, dirt and pet hair - and yet are often neglected. They need frequent dusting but if they have a load of grease and dirt, you're going need to get your hands extra dirty to sort it out. The way to deal with skirting boards depends on whether they are painted or made from natural wood or tile. However, generally, you'll need to dust and vacuum them before applying a gentle mix of warm water and dish soap with a cloth and then wipe them down with a clean towel to make sure they are completely dry.

Window tracks

It's easy to miss dirty window tracks, not noticing things like mould and even dead insects. Joyce suggests opening the window as wide as possible to wipe away any loose debris before going in with a small cleaning brush or old toothbrush and scrubbing away any of the remaining dirt. Then, a mixture of warm water and vinegar can get rid of any "stubborn" grime.

Drains

People usually give their drains a good look when water starts to drain slowly or give off a bad smell but according to the expert "regular cleaning can save a lot of time and money in the long run". What you should do is regularly flush drains with a mixture of baking soda and either lemon juice or vinegar. After half an hour follow it up with hot water to not only prevent blockages but leave the room "smelling amazing."

Curtains

Spring and summer are the perfect seasons for cleaning your curtains. As it gets warmer, there is less need for extra insulation, so when cleaned they can easily be hung out to dry for the "perfect fresh scent."

Joyce shared that many curtains are not machine-friendly and so the best way to clean them is with a damp cloth or steamer. Handheld cleaners, according to the expert are also a great tool to freshen them up whilst still hanging on the rod in between the spring and summer airings.
