A beautiful city in France is an antique market hub but is always 'packed with tourists'.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a city and commune on the Sorgue River in southeastern France. It has a population of 20,000 people and is known as the 'Venice of France'.

As early as the 12th century, the river served defensively as a moat around ramparts which surrounded the city until 1795. The river also served as a source of food and industry: fishing and artisan mills for oil, wheat, silk, paper, woollens, rugs and dyeing.

The small city is famous for its many antique shops and hosts antique markets most Sundays with over 300 dealers. The open-air markets date back to late 1596, and the city is known as the French flea market capital.

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue attracts enthusiasts from all over the world, looking for unique pieces and creations. Its atmosphere and rich heritage position it as a must-see place for lovers of antiques, art and design, offering an experience rich in discoveries and history.

It has many waterside cafés and restaurants, all within walking distance of each other. The many attractive water wheels throughout the town are still in working order.

Just outside the town is the Fontaine de Vaucluse Chasm, an immense 315-metre-deep network of waters with an average flow of 630 million m³ per year. In terms of the volume of water discharged, is the largest in France and one of the largest in the world.

The spring has pulled visitors for centuries, once being a place of ancient pilgrimage. It is cool and peaceful in the summer but surging and impetuous in spring and fall.

But despite this, visitors have said that L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is "packed with tourists". One Tripadvisor user said: "It was virtually impossible to find anywhere to eat or drink as the town itself was so busy.

"I think you could have a better experience if you visited outside of the peak season. It was so busy and hot, everyone was really stressed and the stall owners were too."

Others were able to enjoy themselves despite the crowds, with one visitor saying: "Great town, great food and adorable landscapes - well worth a visit. The stream through the town centre is just amazing, so clear and pretty."

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue offers a range of accommodation, including hotels, holiday villages, guest houses, campsites, and more. Visitors can fly to Marseille from across the UK.
