Disney praised by fans for 'perfect casting' as Lilo & Stitch live action trailer drops

Disney fans were in awe of Lilo & Stitch when it was first released in 2002 and now they're gearing up for which is set to come out in May.

The trailer was unveiled on Wednesday (March 12) and it's safe to say that fans are loving what they're seeing so far.

Taking to the comments section on , viewers praised the casting of Lilo (played by Maia Kealoha) as well as the nostalgia it's bringing back for those who enjoyed the original.

One wrote: "This is the first live-action remake I’m actually excited for, Stitch and the other alien characters look great and it’s really nostalgic to see all the scenes recreated."

Another fan commented: "Glad that they kept the voice actor of Stitch like it would be criminal if someone else had played him. Everything being recreated in live action is actually pretty amazing to look at."

Somebody else gushed: "I can already tell this is gonna be the best Disney live action remake… this live action Stitch design is just too adorable."

Yet another viewer wrote: "The actress playing Lilo not only looks, but sounds like her too, that’s some good casting."

A fifth enthused: "The actress playing Lilo is perfect. Honestly, the voice the way she looks kind of like a human version of Lilo. It’s perfect.

"They chose a perfect actress for this role. Her voice doesn’t sound exactly like animated Lilo but it’s close enough that it gives me the illusion, which is perfect."

While a sixth added: "I feel like the lilo and stitch story actually fits in live action. It’s like the same stitch from the animated movie jumped into our world. It actually feels authentic."

The film's logline teases: "A live-action reimagining of Disney's 2002 animated classic, Lilo and Stitch is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family."

Newcomer Kealoha takes on the title role of Lilo, joined by a talented cast including , Billy Magnussen, Sydney Agudong, and Kaipo Dudoit.

The original animated film, released in 2002, was a massive commercial hit, raking in $273.1 million on a budget of $80 million. Critics also praised the film for its unique storytelling, humour, charm, and originality.

The success of the original spawned a series of sequels, including the direct-to-video films Stitch! The Movie (2003), Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (2005), and Leroy & Stitch (2006).

Lilo & Stitch will release in cinemas on May 23, 2025
