Mangaluru: The widespread installation of illegal flex banners across the city has been a growing concern. Although there has been some control over their proliferation, any resurgence could tarnish not only the city’s environment but also its reputation. Officials warn that these unauthorized banners could further impact Mangaluru’s ranking in the Swachh Survekshan cleanliness survey.

Flex banners affecting city’s ranking

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs conducts an annual Swachh Survekshan ranking for local urban bodies, evaluating cleanliness, waste management, and infrastructure. This ranking plays a crucial role in showcasing a city’s hygiene standards on a national level.

However, in recent years, Mangaluru has seen a decline in its ranking, with improper waste management and unauthorized flex banners being cited as key reasons.

In the Swachh Survekshan 2023, Mangaluru ranked 9th among the 311 urban local bodies in Karnataka. The city’s ranking dropped primarily due to inadequate waste management and the unchecked spread of flex banners and posters. Despite claims by the city corporation about cleanliness initiatives, central survey teams conduct on-ground assessments, and unauthorized banners negatively affect scoring.

Strict action against illegal banners

To improve its ranking, Mangaluru must focus not only on waste management but also on the strict regulation of flex banners. Public representatives must lead by example and avoid putting up illegal banners.

However, in recent days, unauthorized banners featuring political leaders’ photos have been appearing across the city. These include posters for events such as roadwork inaugurations, foundation stone-laying ceremonies, felicitations, and birthday wishes.

Authorities stress that cooperation from both the public and elected representatives is essential to curb this menace and achieve a cleaner, more visually appealing city.

Immediate removal and penalties

Following consistent reports by Udayavani on the issue, the Mangaluru City Corporation has taken action, announcing penalties for violators starting March 17. Officials have confirmed that from Monday onwards, the removal of unauthorized flex banners will be intensified, and fines will be imposed.

Public can report violations

Residents can report unauthorized flex banners by calling the city corporation’s 24×7 helpline at 0824-2220306. Additionally, complaints with photo evidence can be sent via WhatsApp to 9449007722.
