Initially a private matter, the controversy has escalated into a complex scandal involving ethics, legal concerns, and public opinion. According to The PaperKim not only faces public backlash but also potential legal scrutiny.
On March 11, Pinkvilla reported that Garosero Research Institute released an interview featuring a woman claiming to be Kim Sae Ron’s aunt. She alleged that the late actress began dating Kim at 15 and that their relationship lasted six years. The woman also accused Kim of demanding repayment of 700 million won, suggesting that the financial burden contributed to Kim Sae Ron’s distress before her death.
Leaked messages reportedly show Kim Sae Ron acknowledging her inability to repay the full amount immediately, promising instead to settle the debt through future film projects. However, Kim allegedly did not respond and instead shared her contact details with the media, leading to persistent harassment.
Kim Sae Ron’s mother has demanded justice, stating that she seeks only to restore her daughter’s reputation. South Korean media has urged Kim Soo Hyun to publicly apologize to Kim Sae Ron’s family and offer compensation for emotional distress.
On March 12, Dispatch reported that Kim and Kim Sae Ron had been romantically involved but kept their relationship private due to her young age.
Gold Medalist, Kim Soo Hyun’s management company, initially denied any relationship between the two. However, it later acknowledged that they dated from summer 2019 to autumn 2020—after Kim Sae Ron had reached adulthood—refuting claims of an earlier involvement.
The agency also denied allegations that Kim pressured Kim Sae Ron over debts, calling them “not true.” It stated that Kim Sae Ron’s debt was solely a matter between her and Gold Medalist, which had provided financial support but ultimately had to take legal steps to resolve outstanding obligations.
Gold Medalist criticized media speculation, stating: “The story of two young adults meeting and parting ways has been distorted into an endless stream of falsehoods, violating the privacy of the deceased and damaging reputations.”
The agency also condemned Garosero Research Institute for linking Kim Sae Ron’s passing to Kim Soo Hyun, saying the allegations had caused him severe emotional distress.
Since the controversy erupted, Kim has faced mounting criticism, with brands distancing themselves from him.
Korea Joongang Daily reported that Prada, bakery chain Tous les Jours, and sportswear brand K2 have removed his endorsements. According to MK Koreaadvertisers are closely monitoring the situation, as Kim remains a high-profile ambassador for multiple international brands. His scheduled appearance on the variety show “Good Day” has also been canceled.
According to Money TodayKim faces potential financial losses if endorsement deals are canceled. If contracts are breached, Kim could be liable for two to three times the contract amount, potentially exceeding US$13 million across 16 endorsement deals, according to And Triciting South Korean media.
The social media backlash has escalated, with hundreds of thousands of Asian netizens calling for a boycott, labeling Kim “cold-blooded” and “ruthless.” Despite no official investigation, public opinion remains polarized, with some demanding he “take responsibility” for his ex-girlfriend’s death. A major fan account with 460,000 followers has withdrawn support, and Kim’s Instagram following has dropped by 200,000, from 21.26 million to 21.06 million. His recent posts have been inundated with criticism and insults.
Kim Sae Ron was found deceased at her Seoul home on Feb. 16. Authorities reported no signs of foul play, and her funeral took place on Feb. 19.
She gained international recognition as the youngest South Korean actress to attend the Cannes Film Festival for her debut role in the 2009 film “A Brand New Life.” She was also the youngest nominee for Best Actress at South Korea’s prestigious Baeksang Arts Awards.
However, her career suffered setbacks following her 2022 drunk-driving incident, which led to lost film opportunities and endorsements.
