Chief Justice of Delhi High Court D.K. Upadhyay on Monday withdrew the judicial work from Justice Yashwant Verma with immediate effect. The decision was taken when the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna constituted a three -member committee to investigate the matter after reporting a huge amount of cash at the residence of Justice Verma.
According to the circular issued by the Delhi High Court, Justice Verma will not be assigned any judicial work until any further order comes. Along with this, cases under him were handed over to the bench of Justice Subramanian Prasad and Justice Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar.
Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice GS to investigate the matter. A three -member committee of Sandhavalia and Karnataka High Court Judge Anu Shivraman has been formed.
The case is to the fire incident in the government residence of Justice Verma on Tughlaq Road, Delhi on the night of 14 March. The news of getting cash was found there during the fire extinguishing the fire by fire personnel. At that time Justice Verma and his wife were in Bhopal.
Due to this dispute, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended him to transfer him to his original High Court, Allahabad High Court on 20 March. However, some judges, considering the transfer as insufficient, demanded immediate judicial work and formal inquiry.
The debate in the judicial and legal community has intensified on this development. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association opposed their transfer and accused it of making it a “dumping ground”. At the same time, this issue was also discussed in Parliament, where Rajya Sabha President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed the possibility of discussion on judicial accountability.
