New Delhi: Gender equality has been a long-standing societal issue that women have been fighting for decades on end. Even today, although a gradual progress, the issue still persists. We often seem to forget that both male and female leads make a film what it is. But, it is mostly the male counterparts who have had higher paychecks and respect in the industry.

The Indian entertainment industry has gradually begun shifting towards pay parity, but according to actress Tamannaah Bhatia, there is too much of a struggle and almost performative feminism that outlines, “We are women and that we are struggling.” As someone who has worked in both the North and South Indian entertainment industries, here is what Tamannaah had to say.

Tamannaah Bhatia speaks on gender equality in entertainment industry

In an interview with The Hindustan TimesTamannaah Bhatia advocated for women to be responsible for their empowerment and embrace their individuality. However, she pointed out that the industry does have a gradual shift, and is getting better. “I think we are fighting too hard. I think there’s too much of a struggle to empower us or there’s this constant need of outlining that we are women and that we are struggling and that, I mean, it’s us. We are the ones who are constantly putting that into perspective,” stated Tamannaah.

Stating that the ‘wokeness’ that the media and entertainment industry has been projecting has indirectly helped women partly. But, the actress reminded us that women must take ownership of their empowerment and inspire others to do the same.

On the work front, Tamannaah Bhatia was most recently seen in the 2024 film Sikandar Ka Muqqaddar alongside Avinash Tiwari. In 2025, Tamanaah is scheduled to star in the Telugu supernatural thriller film Odela 2set to release on April 17, 2025.
