The Tata Group has reportedly joined the list of global suppliers for Tesla the leading American electric vehicle (EV) company that accounts for nearly half of the global automotive market. Tesla’s potential entry into India has been a trending topic in recent weeks and the Tata Group’s involvement could play a key role in this expansion. According to a report by The Economic Times (ET) several Tata Group companies—including Tata AutoComp Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Tata Technologies and Tata Electronics—are now part of Tesla’s supply chain. These firms are providing crucial components and services having discreetly signed global supply agreements with Elon Musk’s company. It is still unclear whether the Tata Group has already begun shipping parts and services to Tesla. However with growing speculation about Tesla’s upcoming launch in India Tata’s contribution is expected to increase significantly especially if the EV giant establishes a local manufacturing facility. The report also mentions that Tesla is in the process of building a supplier network in India. This indicates that once Tesla starts local production Indian companies could gain substantial sourcing contracts. Tesla’s senior global procurement team has reportedly been in talks with local suppliers regarding the development and production of key automotive components such as castings forgings electronics and fabricated parts. Tesla expands collaboration with Indian suppliers Tesla is reportedly ramping up its partnerships with Indian suppliers sourcing a range of essential components for its electric vehicles (EVs). According to a source cited by The Economic Times (ET) the EV giant is procuring parts such as wiring harnesses electric motors gearboxes forged and cast metal components high-value electronics suspension systems and electric powertrains from Indian companies. Currently Tesla is said to be working with over a dozen Indian firms including Samvardhana Motherson Suprajit Engineering Sona BLW Precision Forgings Varroc Engineering Bharat Forge and Sandhar Technologies. Additionally various Tata Group companies are playing a significant role by offering specialised products and services: Tata AutoComp is delivering engineering components specifically for EVs. Tata Technologies is handling end-to-end product lifecycle management. TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) is contributing circuit-board technologies. Tata Electronics is expected to supply semiconductor chips and printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) used in Tesla’s battery management systems motor controllers and door control units. Tesla has also reportedly instructed its suppliers to shift the production of certain parts away from China and Taiwan by next year. This decision aligns with its broader strategy to reduce dependence on China particularly due to the supply chain disruptions experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. While Tesla continues to manufacture key EV components such as electric motors battery packs and chargers in-house it increasingly relies on external suppliers for sub-assemblies and smaller parts. With its growing network of Indian suppliers Tesla is positioning itself to strengthen its global supply chain and potentially streamline its future expansion into the Indian market.
