Actor Abhay Deol recently hosted an engaging episode of a podcast in collaboration with Durex India , where he spoke with two young voices of today—Prajakta Koli, one of India’s biggest digital creators, and Adarsh Gourav, one of the finest actors of his generation. The trio had an open conversation about learning about sex through pornography , their early experiences, and the impact of media on perceptions of intimacy .

Discovering intimacy through films

Prajakta Koli , popularly known as MostlySane, shared how certain films introduced her to the concept of intimacy while growing up. “During my school years, Raja Hindustani stood out for me. There was one scene that made me think, ‘Oh, this is a thing.’ Another film that stayed with me was Kya Kehna—a particular scene where the characters were behind a tree, with clothes scattered on the ground. Even just the suggestion of it felt quite provocative at the time,” she recalled.

Growing up in an open and communicative family

Prajakta expressed gratitude for having grown up in a nuclear family that encouraged open conversations. “After living with my parents for 31 years, people would often ask me, ‘Don’t you want to live away?’ But I felt there was nothing I couldn’t do while staying with my parents. I was lucky to grow up in a household where I could talk about anything openly,” she said.

First encounter with pornography : A shocking experience

When Abhay Deol asked if she had learned anything from pornography, Prajakta admitted that her first experience left her feeling uneasy. “I remember watching it for the first time and feeling very scared. To add to what you said, it was also designed for men. It didn’t resemble the video I had imagined; it didn’t seem like the woman was having any fun at all. This made it even more frightening,” she said.

She recalled that she and her friend could barely watch a few seconds of it. “The buildup was so enticing, making us think, ‘Oh, this is going to be great.’ But when we actually got to it, both of us were taken aback. I felt overwhelmed and thought, ‘No, no, no, I can’t watch this. This can’t be real.’ We then spiraled into a panic, wondering if we would ever have to experience something like this. It sets really strange expectations for women because it didn’t look enjoyable for the girl at all.”

Romance novels opened a new perspective

Prajakta also shared how she discovered romance novels much later in life, which changed her perspective on intimacy. “Growing up, I didn’t read many romance novels. I was unaware that many movies, like Fifty Shades of Grey, were based on books. I never explored the Mills & Boon genre during my youth. It wasn’t until I was 28 that I picked up my first romance novel at Delhi airport—Set on You by Amy Lea.

“When I read my first explicit scene, I was astonished by how detailed it was. Since then, I have read about 230 books. I’m not saying I read romance novels just for that, but it opened up a whole new world for me. In many ways, it has also helped me understand my own sexuality, allowing me to recognize what excites me and what doesn’t work for me. It was a strange experience to have as an adult, but I’m genuinely grateful for it.”
