The Indian Free Style wrestling team put up a strong show to end the 2025 Senior Asian Wrestling Championship.
Indian wrestlers demonstrated their power and tenacity in the events performed in the last five weight classes of free-style wrestling on the championship’s last day.
Mukul Dahiya (86 kg) and Dinesh (125 kg) competed for the bronze medals, while Udit (61 kg) and Deepak Punia (92 kg) advanced to the finals to compete for the gold.
At the Senior Asian Championship, Udit won silver for the second time in a row while competing in the 61 kg class. He took home silver in the 57 kg class last year.
He showed incredible talent by defeating Chinese wrestler Wanhao Zou by 2-0 points in the semi-finals and Kyrgyz wrestler Bekbolot Myrzanazar Ullu by 9-6 points in the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, despite his valiant effort, he lost against Japan’s Takara Suda 6-4 in the final match, settling for silver.
Deepak Punia achieved an excellent performance in the 92 kg class. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Kyrgyz wrestler Bekzat Rakhimov 12–7, and in the semifinals, he defeated Japan’s Takashi Ishiguro 8–1.
He lost by a substantial score of 10-0 against Iranian wrestler Amirhossein Biglar in the final bout, however, and was awarded silver.
In a fiercely contested match against Zyyamuhammet Saparov, a wrestler from Turkmenistan, Dinesh Kumar (125 kg) showed incredible perseverance.
After a fierce battle, he won 12–12 on the basis of technical superiority to secure the bronze medal. Unfortunately, Mukul Dahiya (86 kg) lost against Tatsuya Shirai of Japan by 4–2 points, barely missing out on a bronze medal.
On the last day of the event, the Indian Free Style Wrestling Team finished with an outstanding total of two silver and one bronze medal.
Another significant milestone in the nation’s wrestling accomplishments was reached when the Indian contingent won a gold, three silver, and six bronze medals overall.
