Recently Narayana Murthy led Infosys was caught in the controversy over firing trainees from Mysore campus. Now British broadcasting giant Sky owned by US-based Comcast has announced plans to cut around 2000 jobs in 2025 which will affect 7% of its workforce. The move is part of its broader effort to modernize its customer service operations and shift towards a more digital-first approach according to a media report.
Were transforming our business to deliver quicker simpler and more digital customer service the spokesperson told AFP. The company is also planning to create a ‘future-ready Sky’ as per changing customer preferences. It includes greater demand for 24/7 digital interactions along with traditional customer support.
Closure Of Call Centres
As part of this action three of Sky’s 10 contact centres located in Stockport Sheffield and Leeds Central are expected to close which will put thousands of jobs at risk. Additionally employees at Dunfermline and Newcastle may also be affected by the restructuring.
Despite the layoffs Sky plans to invest millions of pounds into a new state-of-the-art campus in Livingston Scotland.
Sky previously controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s media empire was acquired by Comcast in 2018 in a $40 billion deal.
US Layoffs
Billionaire Elon Musk who is leading President Donald Trump’s federal cost-cutting initiative has announced an ambitious plan to reduce US government spending by $1 trillion by May 2025.
In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier Musk said that his Department of Government Efficiency aims to achieve these savings within 130 days of Trumps new term which began on January 20 2025.
This aggressive goal will eliminate more than half of the $1.8 trillion spent on non-defense discretionary programs in 2024.
