CBSE syllabus change for Class 10, 12: Grading system, new electives and more, here're key changes

CBSE has introduced significant reforms for the 2025-26 academic year, including the option to take Class 10 board exams twice a year and a shift towards competency-based questions. The revaluation process has been overhauled, and new subject-specific guidelines emphasizing experiential learning and technology integration have been established.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced major updates to the syllabus for the 2025-26 academic session, designed to foster a more dynamic and future-ready learning environment.

The revised curriculum, now available to all affiliated schools, provides a comprehensive framework for academic instruction from Classes IX to XII. It includes subject syllabi, examination structures, learning objectives, and teaching strategies aimed at boosting student engagement and understanding.Schools must follow strategic guidelines.

CBSE has instructed schools to strictly follow the guidelines outlined in the updated curriculum document. Educational institutions are expected to adopt innovative teaching methods while adhering to the prescribed syllabus. The board has emphasized the importance of experiential learning, competency-based assessments, and interdisciplinary teaching approaches to enhance students' critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and overall preparedness for real-world challenges.


CBSE Curriculum 2025-26 Key Reforms


Class 10:

  • The Class 10 board exams will now be held twice a year – in February and April – starting from the academic year 2025-26. This will provide students with more flexibility in taking the exams and improving their scores. A draft scheme for the conduct of 2 Board examinations for Class X has been developed. It is proposed that the scheme be implemented from the 2026 examinations of Class X
  • CBSE has reformed the revaluation process to ensure greater transparency and fairness in assessment.
  • Project-based learning: Engaging students in hands-on problem-solving activities that mirror real-life scenarios.
  • Inquiry-driven education: Stimulating curiosity by prompting students to explore, question, and analyze concepts from multiple perspectives.
  • Technology-integrated learning: Utilizing AI-driven tools, digital platforms, and e-learning resources to improve engagement and accessibility.
  • Collaborative lesson planning: Encouraging teachers to refine strategies dynamically to address evolving educational needs.

New electives for class 12

  • Land Transportation Associate
  • Electronics and Hardware
  • Physical Activity Trainer
  • Design Thinking and Innovation

Other key Changes in the Class 12 Syllabus:

9-Point Grading Scale: Similar to Class 10, the Class 12 syllabus will also be assessed using the 9-point grading system.
Elective Choices: Students can choose one subject from Informatics Practices, Computer Science, or Information Technology (only one of the three).
