Synopsis

Tom Hardy, who played the role of Eddie Brock/Venom in three movies, said that a crossover was once planned between his character and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. But the film never got off the ground. The comments came amid the title announcement of the next Spider-Man movie — Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

With the announcement of Spider-Man 4’s title, excitement among Marvel fans is at its peak. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will feature Tom Holland in his fourth solo outing as Peter Parker or the friendly neighbourhood superhero. A lot of speculation is present about the plot and potential cast members of Brand New Day.

But did you know that a crossover between Marvel’s Spider-Man and Sony’s Venom almost happened? Tom Hardy, who essayed the role of Eddie Brock/Venom in three films, recently revealed how the movie was in the works, but it never happened.

Tom Hardy on Spider-Man-Venom crossover

Tom Hardy made the revelation recently on The Discourse podcast. He claimed that the crossover project “got as close as I could possibly imagine getting” to production, before things fell apart.

Hardy said, “We got as close as I could possibly imagine getting, apart from doing a film together, which I would have loved to have done because that just means so much fun.”
When asked if the project was stalled due to studio politics, the Peaky Blinders star admitted that the crossover didn’t happen “for all the reasons that you explained ultimately in there.”

Long held plans for Venom and Spider-Man

Back in 2019, Ruben Fleischer who directed the first Venom film, said that there were always plans for a meeting between Tom Holland and Tom Hardy’s characters. Tom Hardy had also claimed at the premiere of Venom: The Last Dance that he would love to fight Spider-Man in a film.

Could Venom come back for another movie?

With Venom: The Last Dance being Tom Hardy’s last outing as the character, it is unclear if he will return to the franchise. The recent cast announcement of Avengers: Doomsday did not feature Tom Holland’s Spider-Man nor anyone from Sony’s Venom franchise.

As for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the plot details are being guarded closely. So it is unclear who the main antagonist of the movie could be.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day possible villain

Post the title announcement, fans have been speculating that the movie could follow the plot of the Spider-Man comic Brand New Day. If that is true, it could bring the character of Harry Osborn, Spider-Man’s friend and son of the original Green Goblin Norman Osborn, into the Marvel films. Fans have claimed that Sadie Sink, who has been cast in an unspecified role for Spider-Man 4, could be the villain Menace.

While Avengers: Doomsday hasn’t officially cast Tom Holland, he could appear in a post-credit scene, as many other superheroes have done. This could tie Spider-Man with the latest part of the Avengers series, setting the stage for another team-up sometime in the future.
