The injury status of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was updated by batting coach Michael Hussey before the team’s home match against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

During the previous match against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati in the current 18th season of the lucrative league, Gaikwad was struck on his exposed elbow. The 28-year-old athlete was pursuing a target of 183 runs when he stepped out on the bowling of right-arm seamer Tushar Deshpande in the second over.

The former cricket player said at the pre-game news conference that Gaikwad’s elbow is now hurting but is improving daily.

Indeed, we’re hopeful that Gaikwad will attempt to use a bat for training today. Yes, my elbow still hurts a little, but it gets better every day. So, we’re really hoping that he’ll be okay for tomorrow,” ESPNcricinfo cited Michael Hussey as saying.

The 49-year-old also said that MS Dhoni, a batsman and wicketkeeper, will probably start for the five-time winners against the undefeated Delhi Capitals on Sunday at Chennai’s MA Chidmbaram Stadium.

We haven’t really given it [captaincy] much consideration, in my opinion. Well, I haven’t given it any consideration. Rutu and Stephen Fleming, the head coach of CSK, have undoubtedly considered that. However, there is a young man emerging.

Behind the stumps is where he is. He could be able to do well. I don’t know. Perhaps he could accomplish it since he has some experience in the position. To be honest, however, I’m not really sure,” the former IPL star said.
