To make a film not only hard work passion a huge team but also a lot of money is required. If a film is successful it changes ones fortunes or else it ruins even the best of the best. There was one such superstar who made many films of a particular genre. He was considered an expert in making patriotic films. Yes you understood correctly it was none other than Bharat Kumar aka Manoj Kumar. He made many superhit films but there was one film for which he put his home and everything at stake.
Manoj Kumar who made films like Upkaar Purba Aur Paschim Roti Kapda Aur Makaan made the biggest period action drama film in 1981. Its name is Kranti. When this film was released there was a tsunami at the box office and it became the highest-grossing film not only of that year but also of the 1980s. Making Kranti was not at all easy for Manoj Kumar. The film starring Shatrughan Sinha Dilip Kumar Manoj Kumar Hema Malini Prem Chopra and Parveen Babi was based on the 19th century kranti. It was one of the most expensive films of Indian cinema.
Salim-Javed. Dilip Kumar also returned after 4 years through this film. Its budget was going to be 3 crores. But when the shooting of the film started the producers and some makers backed out. In such a situation all the money had to be given to Manoj Kumar himself. Now he was not only its actor but also the director. This film was very important for him.
In such a situation Manoj Kumar sold his bungalow in Delhi for Kranti. He had to sell his land in Mumbai as well. But when the film was released in theatres Manoj Kumars hard work and all his efforts were successful. It was declared a blockbuster and ran in theatres for 400 days. Its silver jubilee was celebrated at 26 centers and golden jubilee at some places.
When Sholay was released it earned Rs 15 crore. But Kranti had crossed the Rs 20 crore mark worldwide. However when Ramesh Sippy re-released Sholay it surpassed Manoj Kumars film. Manoj Kumar ruled Hindi cinema for many years. He also gave blockbusters like Kranti. But after 6 years his career started declining. Films like Kalyug and Ramayan Santosh and Clerk flopped. After Maidan-e-Jung in 1995 he even quit acting. He made Jai Hind for his son in 1999 but even this could not save his honour. Slowly his career started to stagnate. Some people believe that after making similar films and the entry of new stars the graph of his career started falling.
