Journalist Demands Justice After Assault Incident

In Puri, journalist Linu Nayak organized an overnight protest outside the Puri Superintendent of Police's office, seeking justice following an alleged assault by servitors of the Jagannath Temple. On Tuesday, she was joined by numerous journalists who rallied in support, amplifying calls for prompt legal action.

The incident, which took place over 48 hours prior, has drawn significant backlash from media professionals and opposition parties due to the lack of arrests. Protesters delivered a memorandum to Puri District Collector Siddhartha Shankar Swain, urging immediate legal measures against the accused servitors.

Nayak, who remained outside the SP's office throughout the night, expressed her determination to continue protesting until justice is served. Local administrative officials, including the tehsildar, attempted to negotiate with her to end the demonstration, but she insisted on concrete action before considering any resolution.

Sources indicate that on April 6, 2025, Nayak and her camera crew visited the Singhadwar (Lion’s Gate) of the Jagannath Temple after receiving information that certain servitors were allegedly accepting bribes for privileged darshan (viewing) for devotees. While trying to capture footage, they were confronted by a group of sevayats who opposed their presence.

The situation escalated into violence, with servitors reportedly seizing cameras and mobile devices from the journalists and physically assaulting them. Both Nayak and her cameraman were injured and required treatment at the district headquarters hospital in Puri.

An FIR was lodged at the Singhadwar police station based on Nayak's complaint, which included allegations of mental harassment, physical assault, and intimidation.

Despite assurances from Puri SP Vinit Agrawal regarding an impartial investigation and strict actions, journalists have criticized the police for their inaction.
