Manchester Manchester United defeated Lyon 7–6 on aggregate in the quarterfinals to secure their spot in the Europa League semifinals.
Ten-man Lyon rallied to take a 3-2 lead, but Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire’s late goals in extra time gave the home team a thrilling 5-4 win (7-6 overall), setting them up to play Athletic Club in the quarterfinals.
Alejandro Garnacho cut back to Manuel Ugarte inside the Lyon area, and the Uruguayan midfielder fired a shot past visiting custodian Lucas Perri to give Man United the lead 10 minutes into the game.
According to the Europe League, United nearly doubled their lead on 36 minutes when Bruno Fernandes’ spectacular volleyed goal was blocked by the crossbar. However, the home team did score a second goal shortly before halftime when Harry Maguire sent a long ball forward for Diogo Dalot to control and shoot low into the far corner.
Early in the second half, both goalkeepers produced crucial saves: André Onana stopped Corentin Tolisso’s bouncing drive from close range, while Perri stopped Garnacho as he was running.
With less than 20 minutes left, Lyon launched a spectacular comeback, with Tolisso nodding in after a string of headers inside the United area. Eight minutes later, the French team equalised when replacement Malick Fofana sent a cross that made its way to Nicolás Tagliafico, who was unable to stop it from going over the line.
Lyon led at the conclusion of the first extra time session as Cherki pounced on an intercepted ball after Fofana’s run and made a swift, precise strike, despite losing Tolisso to a second yellow card on minute 89.
Fernandes swiftly restored United’s hopes with a spot kick of his own after Alexandre Lacazatte scored a fourth from the penalty spot. Kobbie Mainoo equalised with a looping goal in the 120th minute, but astonishingly, Maguire, who had switched to a center-forward position, had time to head an amazing winner to give United a dramatic victory.
