The much-anticipated Minecraft Movie is making headlines as it crafts its way into box office history. Based on Mojang Studios’ iconic 2011 video game, the fantasy adventure comedy has officially crossed the $300 million mark in the U.S., becoming the first film of 2025 to do so. It’s also only the second video game adaptation in history after The Super Mario Bros. Movie to reach that milestone domestically.
A Rare Box Office Hold
Starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, the PG-rated family film earned $6.5 million on its second Thursday, buoyed by the post-Easter crowd. Impressively, it dropped just 8.9% from the previous Thursday, a rare hold in today’s volatile box office climate. That figure also places it third among April’s biggest second Thursdays, behind only Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War.
After just two weeks in theaters, A Minecraft Movie has grossed $303.3 million in the U.S., with projections estimating a final domestic total between $440 million and $470 million.
A Journey from Pixels to Popcorn
Directed by Jared Hess and co-written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, and others, the film follows four misfits who are sucked into the world of Minecraft through a portal. With the help of a skilled builder named Steve, they must find a way back home. The cast also features Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen.
