Prepaid smart meters are being distributed to more than three crore customers in the state by Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL). Ashish Goyal, the chairman of the UPPCL, installed the first meter at his home to kick off the project.
It is anticipated that this action would address the ongoing issue of inaccurate power bills. These new meters include a prepaid mode as part of the continuing smart meter initiative, which enables quick recharging for users.
The prepaid smart meter was used in lieu of the Chairman’s old one. He underlined that smart meters, which provide precise readings without needing monthly manual checks, are the way of the future.
Installing these meters in every residence would increase transparency and reduce power theft. Over 2,845,274 of the 30,978,000 smart meters that were intended have already been placed, with government buildings now receiving the majority of these installations.
Customers may monitor and manage their energy use thanks to the real-time data provided by the prepaid smart meters. According to the agency, this removes the chance of inaccurate billing. Additionally, these meters provide load control alarms for excessive use and early notification of power outages.
