Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to demonstrate loyalty to his alma mater, Texas Tech University. On June 5, Mahomes was spotted attending Game 2 of the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) championship between Texas Tech and Texas at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
He was seen alongside his wife, Brittany Mahomes, in a press box extension before the game began.
A day prior to his appearance at the WCWS, Mahomes sent personalized varsity letter jackets and shoes to the Texas Tech softball team. The Red Raiders are making their first-ever appearance in the WCWS, marking a historic moment for the program.
Texas Tech’s official X (formerly Twitter) account shared a video of coach Gerry Glasco announcing Mahomes’ gift, calling him the team’s “No. 1 fan.”
Although Mahomes has long supported women’s sports—as a co-owner of the Kansas City Current in the NWSL—his reason for being at the June 5 game is simple: he’s there to cheer for Texas Tech. The school holds personal significance for Mahomes, who played football there from 2014 to 2016. With the Red Raiders aiming to even the series after a narrow 2-1 loss to Texas in Game 1, Mahomes’ presence is a major morale boost.
Game 2 between Texas Tech and Texas faced a temporary delay due to inclement weather in the Oklahoma City area. Despite the pause, the excitement surrounding the game remained high, with Mahomes’ presence drawing additional attention to the historic matchup.
Mahomes’ support for the Red Raiders extends beyond just game-day appearances. During the offseason, he played a key role in helping Texas Tech recruit star pitcher NiJaree Canady, who transferred from Stanford. Canady is now the first softball player to secure an NIL deal exceeding $1 million and is signed under “Team Mahomes,” the quarterback’s Adidas-backed NIL initiative.
Mahomes’ enthusiasm for the Red Raiders was also evident during their win against Florida State in the Tallahassee Super Regional. A video surfaced showing Mahomes watching the game live while on a commercial shoot. He later tweeted his support for Canady and the team, urging them to “Finish strong!”
In addition to his recent gestures, Mahomes made headlines in 2024 by donating $5 million to support renovations of Texas Tech’s football stadium. The generous contribution highlights his ongoing commitment to the university’s athletic programs.
Patrick Mahomes played quarterback for Texas Tech from 2014 to 2016, where he quickly established himself as one of the top passers in college football. By his junior year, he led the nation with 5,052 passing yards in just 12 games, thriving in coach Kliff Kingsbury’s offensive system. In total, Mahomes completed 63.5% of his passes for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns during his collegiate career.
After an outstanding college career, Mahomes was selected 10th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Since then, he has become one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history, winning multiple Super Bowl titles and earning league MVP honors.
Patrick Mahomes continues to show that he’s more than just a football star. His active support of women’s sports, charitable giving, and engagement with his alma mater reinforce his role as a model athlete and leader both on and off the field.
