Kerala police have arrested 14 individuals in connection with a sexual exploitation case involving a 16-year-old boy through a dating app. The incident has raised serious concerns about the dangers posed by online platforms. In response, authorities have announced plans to expand their Digital De-Addiction (D-DAD) program to protect children from digital addiction and cyber-related crimes.
Exploitation Through Dating AppsAccording to police reports, the teenager was lured into friendship by perpetrators on a dating app and subsequently sexually exploited. The investigation revealed that the victim had been using fake profiles on the app for nearly two years. Among the accused are government employees, highlighting the broad scope of the crime.
The case has drawn attention to the risks that children face online, especially when using social media and dating platforms without supervision.
Digital De-Addiction Program (D-DAD)Kerala police launched the D-DAD program in 2023, the country’s first initiative aimed at preventing children from developing addictions to online games, social media, and pornography. Currently, six D-DAD centers operate in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur.
Following this case, authorities have decided to expand the program to reach more children and provide guidance on safe online behavior.
Government ResponseDuring a recent assembly session, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted the serious consequences of digital addiction. Between January 2021 and September 9, 2025, 41 children committed suicide due to mobile and internet misuse. Additionally, 30 children were found involved in sexual offenses or drug-related crimes, prompting legal action.
Steps to Take in Case of Cyber FraudIf someone falls victim to cyber fraud, they should immediately contact the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930) to report the incident and attempt to freeze transactions. Complaints can also be filed online at cybercrime.gov.in. Victims should promptly inform their banks about suspicious transactions and register an FIR with local authorities to ensure proper legal action.
Raising AwarenessThis case serves as a stark reminder of the growing cyber risks for minors. Parents and guardians are urged to educate children about safe online practices, monitor app usage, and use awareness programs like D-DAD to prevent such incidents
