Attack on police camp in Tinsukia, Assam, 4 commandos injured, Himanta said - they will be caught

Unidentified terrorists fired multiple rocket-propelled grenades (RPG) at a police commando camp in Assam's Tinsukia district early Sunday, injuring at least four policemen. According to witnesses, the attack started around 2 am and lasted for about 20 minutes. An officer present in the camp said that we heard the first sound at 2:01 in the night. After this there were several explosions from suspected mortar. The attack took place at a camp located near the 10th mile area under Jagun outpost of Lekhapani police station.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this is highly condemnable. The army and police have started anti-insurgency operations. I think whoever did this will definitely be caught.

This area is a sensitive area near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. Officials said at least five RPG shells were fired at the camp. Four of these exploded inside the camp. He also told that there was firing after the blasts. The injured commandos are currently being treated in the camp. There is no information yet about the seriousness of his injuries. Authorities have not yet issued any detailed statement regarding casualties or damage.

Security increased in other parts of Assam

A team of senior police officers led by Tinsukia Senior Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar Jha reached the spot immediately after the incident. Officials said that after this attack, security has been increased in the entire Tinsukia district and other parts of Upper Assam.

A similar incident took place in October last year, when some suspected militants opened fire on an Indian Army camp in Kakopathar, Tinsukia, in which three soldiers were injured.

According to a statement issued by the army at that time, some unknown assailants had fired on the camp from a moving vehicle around midnight. The troops responded immediately and also ensured the safety of civilians in nearby residential areas. Officials had said that after the firing the attackers fled from the spot. The Army later confirmed that the injured soldiers suffered minor injuries and the area was secured soon after.
