Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates have been warned to remain vigilant, as Congo possess the talent to trouble Portugal.

Portugal must be cautious of the quality that the Congolese side brings to the field when the two teams clash in their Group K match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match between Portugal and Congo is scheduled to take place at NRG Stadium in Houston on Thursday, 18 June 2026, at 00:00 WIB.

For this encounter, Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez is expected to once again rely on star forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the two international matches Portugal played before the 2026 World Cup, Martinez included Ronaldo in his starting eleven.

Ronaldo led the attack when Portugal defeated Chile 2-1 on 7 June 2026.

He also started as the main striker against Nigeria on 11 June 2026, although he failed to score in both fixtures.

Aside from Ronaldo, Martinez also has a strong supporting cast featuring players such as Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao, and Francisco Conceicao, among others.

According to the latest FIFA rankings, Portugal hold a significant advantage, sitting fifth in the world.

Congo, on the other hand, are ranked 45th globally.

Nonetheless, Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates must be wary of the potential surprises Congo can produce.

The Congolese squad includes several players capable of making life difficult for Portugal.

ESPN recently analysed Congo’s strength ahead of the 2026 World Cup, highlighting their defensive core built around Premier League experience.

In total, Congo have four players currently featuring in the Premier League: Aaron Wan-Bissaka (West Ham), Axel Tuanzebe (Burnley), Noah Sadiki (Sunderland), and Yoane Wissa (Newcastle United).

“Fifty-two years later, the situation is very different for DR Congo. They now boast a defensive line featuring Premier League quality in Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe,” ESPN reported.

“Elsewhere, Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa is deployed on the wing to support Cedric Bakambu up front, while Noah Sadiki stands out as an impressive talent in midfield.

“Clearly, Congo have enough quality to trouble Portugal, and with Uzbekistan also in the same group, there remains hope of advancing to the knockout stage.

“However, Desabre’s cautious approach has its critics and may struggle against Portugal’s creative players who are adept at breaking down compact defences,” the report added.

For reference, the top two teams from each group automatically qualify for the knockout stage, while the third-placed teams also have a chance to progress based on their ranking.
