Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has sent a strong message to his team’s potential World Cup final opponents, saying his side currently feel “unbeatable” after their commanding 2-0 win over France in the semi-final. Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro were on target in Arlington, guiding La Roja into Sunday’s final in New York.
France once again fell short against Spain, who showed their ruthless edge in front of goal. Oyarzabal converted a first-half penalty before Porro added a second after the break. This victory marked Spain’s third successive triumph over France at the semi-final stage of a major competition. Following their Lamine Yamal-inspired win at Euro 2024 and their Nations League success last year, Spain once again overcame Les Bleus, this time on the world stage. La Roja will travel to New York as strong favourites to lift the World Cup trophy for the first time since 2010.
De la Fuente was full of praise for his players after dismantling one of the tournament’s top contenders. The Spaniards’ tactical discipline and attacking precision left France unable to respond. “We’re feeling unbeatable,” De la Fuente told reporters. “France came up against the best team in the world. We have that extra edge. These players deserve everything because every day they show their commitment, generosity, unity, and talent. Watching them play is a joy. Today was a spectacle. What seems difficult, they make look easy.”
Spain’s victory also extended their historic unbeaten streak to 37 matches, equalling the European record for men’s international football set by Italy between 2018 and 2021. This achievement marks another milestone in what has been an extraordinary campaign for De la Fuente’s side.
Their journey hasn’t been entirely smooth. La Roja began with a disappointing 0-0 draw against Cape Verde but have since produced clinical wins over Portugal, Belgium, and now France. The coach reflected on the team’s steady improvement, saying: “We knew we had to grow step by step. Of course, we wanted to win the first game, but it’s all part of a process. We aimed to reach these decisive moments in peak condition — and now we are. In terms of performance, we’ve reached our best level.”
Spain will now face either England or Argentina in Sunday’s final. A clash with Argentina would pit the European champions against the reigning world champions, while a meeting with England would be a repeat of the Euro 2024 final held in Germany two years ago.
When asked about his preference for the final, De la Fuente was diplomatic but expressed admiration for both potential opponents. “At this point, we don’t prefer one or the other,” he said. “Each team has its own strengths. I would be excited to play Argentina because I’m good friends with Lionel Scaloni, but I also have great respect for England. We’ll welcome either team with open arms.”
