Devshayani Ekadashi Fast 2026: Every year, on the day of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month, devotees of Lord Vishnu observe fast on Devshayani Ekadashi and worship him with rituals. Devshayani Ekadashi is very special, because on this day God leaves the responsibility of maintaining the world for four months and goes to rest in the underworld i.e. Yoga Nidra. After this, Chaturmas of four months starts, which ends on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Chaturmas is starting tomorrow from Devshayani Ekadashi.

It will conclude on 20th November on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi. On the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is worshiped and fasted with rituals. There is a religious belief that fasting and worshiping on this day brings happiness in life and after death the soul attains a place at the feet of Shri Hari Vishnu. The rules of worship and fasting on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi are mentioned in the scriptures. One should not commit any mistakes on this day, otherwise the full results of the fast are not achieved and poverty prevails in the house.

Do not make these mistakes on Devshayani Ekadashi

1. Do not consume rice, wheat, pulses and other grains even by mistake on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi. Due to this the fast gets broken.
2. Do not eat meat, fish, eggs, alcohol and other Tamasic food on this holy day. By doing this Lord Vishnu gets angry.
3. Do not pluck basil leaves even by mistake on the occasion of Ekadashi. It is not considered auspicious to do so.
4. Do not even offer water to Tulsi on this holy day. It is believed that on Ekadashi, Tulsi ji observes a waterless fast for Lord Vishnu.
5. On this day, do not insult the poor, the elderly, saints, parents and needy people.
6. Chaturmas starts from the day of Devshayani Ekadasi. In such a situation, do not do any auspicious work from this day till the end of Chaturmas.
7. Maintain peace at home on this day. Do not get angry at anyone or have any dispute with anyone.
8. Do not wear dirty and black clothes on this day, rather wear clean and light colored (especially yellow) clothes.
9. Give up laziness on the day of Ekadashi. Do not sleep during the day even by mistake on the day of fasting.
10. Break the fast of Ekadashi only on Dwadashi date. Do not break the fast at wrong time and rules.
