New Delhi. The new SIM card rules issued by the Department of Telecommunications of the Central Government have come into effect from Monday. Under the new rules, a user can have a maximum of 9 mobile connections in his name. Whereas for Jammu-Kashmir, Assam and North-East this limit has been fixed at 6 mobile connections.
The Department of Telecommunications has directed telecom companies to identify customers who have mobile connections close to the pre-determined limit. Such customers will not be able to get a new connection under the new rules.
Under the new instructions, customers will have to provide information in the Customer Application Form (CAF) about how many mobile connections they already have in their name across different telecom operators and licensed service areas.
According to the circular of the Department of Telecommunications, information about customers having mobile connections more than the prescribed limit is available on the Department’s Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP). This system has been developed to help telecom operators identify customers in whose name the prescribed limit of mobile connections has been exceeded.
In the new system, photographs will be used to identify customers. DoT will provide on DIP the photo of those subscribers who have reached the maximum mobile connection limit. Telecom companies will be able to download the photos of these subscribers through DIP.
Under the new system, if a user takes a mobile connection more than the prescribed limit, then it will be suspended after the connection is activated. This suspension will continue until the issue to having mobile connections beyond the prescribed limit is resolved.
The circular from the Department of Telecommunications states that unless the telecom service providers take necessary steps based on the conditions of CAF, any mobile connection activated beyond the prescribed limit will be immediately suspended. This suspension will continue till the resolution of the matter to exceeding the prescribed limit of mobile connection.
