Over 4,800 stolen weapons remain unrecovered in ethnic strife-torn Manipur

In Manipur, over 4800 looted weapons remain unrecovered amid ongoing ethnic strife. The state has faced repeated arms thefts since May last year, with more incidents in valley districts. Recent joint operations by the Indian Army and Manipur Police have led to significant recoveries of illegal arms and warlike stores.

Guwahati: Over 4800 looted weapons in ethnic strife torn Manipur are yet to be recovered.

Manipur has witnessed repeated arms loot from armouries since May 3 last year. Over 6000 weapons were looted. The arms loot was more in valley districts.

Security Advisor to the Chief Minister of Manipur, Kuldiep Singh in Imphal on Friday while talking to the media persons said around 6000 weapons were looted, around 2681 were recovered out of which only 1200 are looted weapons. So, 1400 weapons were not looted.

Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens in Manipur and called for community support in maintaining peace and stability. The investigation into drone bombing incidents has been forwarded to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for further scrutiny. He informed that Manipur would have SOP on drone use.

Manipur witnessed hi tech attacks by drone bombs and rocket propelled bombs. Following the attack by drone bombs and rocket propelled bombs, the security forces have deployed an anti-drone system to repel the rogue drones.

At least 226people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.

The riots began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

In two successful joint operations conducted on Saturday, the Indian Army, in coordination with the Manipur Police, made significant recoveries of illegal arms and warlike stores from Churachandpur and fringe areas Thoubal, and Imphal East districts. These operations underscore the Indian Army’s ongoing peace efforts in the region, with the demilitarization of the local population as a primary objective.

In the first operation, a combined team of the Indian Army and Churachandpur Police carried out a search in the heavily forested upper reaches of Thangjing Ridge in Churachandpur District. The operation led to the recovery of two 9 mm pistols along with two pistol magazines, a single-barrel rifle, two locally fabricated rockets measuring 5.5 feet and 3 feet respectively, a modified long-range mortar, two modified medium-range mortars, four mortar bombs, nine rounds of 9 mm ammunition, 6.2 kilograms of Grade Two explosives, and war like stores.

In a separate operation, acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team of Indian Army and Manipur Police carried out a search at Changbi Village lying at the fringe areas of Thoubal and Imphal East districts. This operation resulted in the recovery of two carbine machine guns, two pistols, a single-barrel gun, nine hand grenades, eleven rounds of small arms ammunition and other warlike stores.

All recovered arms and warlike stores have been handed over to the Manipur Police for further investigation and legal proceedings.
