New Delhi, Oct 22: At the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games India's ace pistol shooter Samresh Jung was bestowed with the "best athlete" award for his stupendous performance at the shooting ranges.
Jung won five gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal in the Down Under games and was honoured with the David Dixon Award. Jung was nicknamed "golden finger". No Badminton at CWG 2026! It feels like a Conspiracy: BAI Secy Olympian and multiple medal winner at international events, the Delhi-based former shooter-cum-coach expressed his disappointment on Tuesday (October 22) learning that shooting was among five disciplines scrapped from the 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026. The CGF announced on Tuesday after the Scottish government gave the green signal to host the multi-discipline event for the Commonwealth countries that certain disciplines will not feature at the next Commonwealth Games in Glasgow due to cost-cutting. MyKhel Special:Low-Budget CWG 2026 slashes India's key sports, threatening medal count Citing financial costs, the host city has scrapped badminton, hockey, shooting, wrestling and cricket from the 2026 edition. The move hasn't gone well with the Indian sporting fraternity for it will dilute the Indian contingent's medal tally. At the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, India finished fourth with a total of 61 medals, including 22 gold. Australia topped the chart with 179 medals, including 67 golds. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast (Australia), India finished third with 66 medals, including 26 golds. The Indian shooting team won seven gold, four silver and five bronze medals. "Commonwealth Games act as good international exposure," Jung said. "Since Commonwealth Games are held two years before the Olympic Games cycle, it also acts as a stepping stone to prepare for the major competition." In the build-up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) threatened to pull out of the 2022 CWG as CGF proposed to cancel archery and shooting disciplines from the programme. The IOA later withdrew the boycott threat as India with the support of all stakeholders planned to host an archery and shooting event in Chandigarh. The event was, however, cancelled due to Covid19 pandemic. Jung said the CGF should have their priorities clear. To continue the legacy of the Commonwealth Games certain Olympic disciplines like shooting, hockey and wrestling shouldn't be scrapped because of the worldwide fan following. Initially, Victoria in Australia was the host city of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, but the Australia government expressed their inability to conduct the games due to high cost. Last month the Scottish Government gave their nod to CGF to conduct the games but with just 10 disciplines on the programme. Not having disciplines like shooting will certainly impact India's medal tally, but that is not the long-term solution. "India is only good in rifle and pistol events. While Australia and England are good in shotgun events," the national pistol coach added. India's medal tally in shooting discipline was ordinary in the late 1990s. "At the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Indian shooters won half a dozen medals only. Then nobody said of scrapping shooting discipline from the Commonwealth Games," Jung recalled. With the appointment of foreign shooting experts, better training facilities and hard work, the performance of the Indian shooting team got better. "Good coaching resulted in India winning more medals at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games as a team," Jung explained. "While Australia and England also had good individual shooters but as a team, some nations weren't good." Medal winners of the Commonwealth Games, Jung said, are entitled to a big cash bonanza. "The government gives cash incentives to medal winners of the Commonwealth Games. It's a big motivating factor for the players," the national pistol coach added. "The CGF should have a holistic approach to conduct the future games. They are denying international exposure to potential shooters."
